Why an external flash?

One of the biggest questions a new SLR (single lens reflex) camera owner will inevitably ask is "why an external flash?" In many cases, a flash will be already built into the camera body, so why is it necessary to add a separate flash to your arsenal? There are many reasons for why you would want to add an external flash to your photography kit, but the biggest reason is POWER

The built-in flash on an SLR camera has relatively little power. It is really only sufficient for illuminating subjects a few feet infront of you. In addition, it only has one angle, which is straight on. With a built-in flash, all of your subjects are illuminated from a few feet away and directly at them. This type of flash photography creates strong "hot" spots (brightly lit areas) and many shadows. Essentially, it is not glamorous lighting. 

An external flash provides more power that allows you to back away from your subject instead of being only a few feet infront of them. In addition, most external flashes, like the Nikon SB-910, can swivel and tilt their flash heads to bounce the light emitted by the flash. Bounced light can fill in shadows around and behind your subjects. Essentially, an external flash like the Nikon SB-910 can produce more light that is much more glamorous for your subjects. 

Why the Nikon SB-910?

The SB-910 is Nikon's flagship external flash unit. It is compatible with all of Nikon's modern digital SLR cameras that feature a hot-shoe. The Nikon SB-910 has a high guide-number rating, which means it is powerful and can put out a lot of light. As noted above, the SB-910 flash head can also swivel and tilt to bounce the flash light. It can also take filters, some of which are included with the flash. Filters allow you to change the color temperature of light emitted by the flash. This is very important if you want to match the flash's light to the ambient light temperature of your scene, which will greatly improve your flash photography. 

A great feature of Nikon's SB-910 is its performance in Nikon's wireless flash system. The SB-910 can act as either a commander/controller or a slave when using it in a wireless flash set up. Free yourself from cables and heavy studio lighting equipment by using multiple SB-910s and/or other, compatible Nikon flashes. 

The Nikon SB-910 also features an advanced temperature monitor that will keep the flash from overheating by keeping it from firing if the flash gets too hot. Overheated flashes are bad news because the flash bulb will burnout, and then it is a costly repair.
